(Yes, I'll be reading, but also stalking turkey!)
If you are like me, you've been stockpiling books for the past few months to absolutely destroy over the Thanksgiving holiday (that is, if you get one, or even live in a country where Thanksgiving is a thing). My partner-in-crime and I will be high-tailing it up to Washington State to spend a week with his mother and the kittens (though they're not really kittens anymore, *weep*), which means seven lovely days of signing off from the day job and curling up by the wood stove with some really good wine and a few good books.
What's on my list? I'M GLAD YOU ASKED. (I mean. You clicked on this post. Which is like asking.)
The Testaments, by Margaret Atwood. I read The Handmaid's Tale in one sitting in college and it rocked my world. Of course, that was back in the days when folks seemed to view it more as literature and not a freaking instruction manual. Over the last ten years it's seemed like we were hearing comparisons to the harrowing world of Gilead more and more often, so I was both relieved and ecstatic to hear that Atwood was writing a follow-up. As she said in an interview I read a while back (though I can't find it now), picking up the story of The Handmaid's Tale seemed inevitable in a world that, unfortunately, seems to be moving more toward the ideals of Gildead than away from them.
The Starless Sea, by Erin Morganstern. Because come on, who is NOT currently reading (or anticipating reading in the near future) The Starless Sea. I adored The Night Circus for the sheer beauty of its prose and the simple yet richly created nature of the story and have been waiting patiently lo these many years for a new Morganstern to devour. Based on the reviews I've read so far, I doubt I'll be disappointed!
The Lost Night, by Andrea Bartz. I adore a woman-centerd psychological thriller (Gillian Flynn, Paula Hawkins, A.J. Flynn, I am looking at you as well!) so when I came across this offering and its many glowing reviews, I was sold. These types of books take everything I love about mysteries, crime novels, and smart character-driven storied and whisk them up into a sub-genre (category? I can never keep that stuff straight) that I find utterly irresistable.
How about you, my friends? What are you reading over the Thanksgiving break? DO YOU EVEN GET A THANKSGIVING BREAK?? If not, what's currently topping your to-read list and when will you finally get to it?
